Costume Care 101: Tips to Keep Your Outfit Looking Fresh

News

Whether you’re preparing for Halloween, a cosplay event, a theatrical performance, or a themed party, your costume is a crucial part of your overall look. After spending time and money on the perfect outfit, it’s important to ensure that your costume stays in top condition, both during and after use. Proper costume care not only keeps your outfit looking fresh and vibrant but also extends its lifespan, allowing you to wear it multiple times or even pass it on to others. Here’s a comprehensive guide to caring for your costume, from the moment you put it on to long-term storage.

1. Preparing Your Costume Before Wear

Before you even step out in your costume, a little preparation can go a long way in maintaining its quality.

Inspect for Flaws:

  • Check for Damage: Inspect your costume for any loose threads, missing buttons, or weak seams. Address these issues before wearing the costume to prevent further damage. A quick stitch or a little fabric glue can save you from a wardrobe malfunction later.
  • Test Zippers and Fastenings: Make sure all zippers, buttons, Velcro, and other fastenings work properly. Lubricate sticky zippers with a little candle wax or soap to ensure they glide smoothly.

Iron or Steam:

  • Remove Wrinkles: Wrinkles can make even the most elaborate costume look unkempt. Use an iron on the appropriate setting for your fabric, or opt for a garment steamer for more delicate materials. Always test a small, inconspicuous area first to avoid damaging the fabric.
  • Avoid High Heat: Be cautious with synthetic materials like polyester, which can melt or become misshapen under high heat. Use a low setting and consider placing a cloth between the iron and the costume.

Waterproofing and Stain Protection:

  • Apply Fabric Protector: For costumes made from delicate or light-colored fabrics, consider applying a fabric protector spray before wearing it. This can help repel stains and moisture, keeping your costume clean and fresh.
  • Test on a Small Area: Before applying any sprays or treatments, test them on a small, hidden area of the costume to ensure they won’t cause discoloration or damage.

2. Wearing Your Costume: Tips for the Day Of

On the day of your event, a few precautions can help you keep your costume looking its best from start to finish.

Layering for Protection:

  • Wear Undergarments: Wearing a lightweight, breathable layer underneath your costume can help absorb sweat and protect the fabric from body oils and makeup. This is especially important for expensive or intricate costumes.
  • Avoid Direct Skin Contact: If possible, avoid direct skin contact with delicate areas of your costume, especially parts that may stain easily, such as light-colored fabrics or intricate embroidery.

Mindful Eating and Drinking:

  • Avoid Spills: If you’re eating or drinking in your costume, be extra cautious. Consider wearing a napkin or bib while eating to catch any drips, especially when consuming items like red wine or sauces that could stain.
  • Carry Stain Removers: Bring along a portable stain remover pen or wipes to address any accidental spills immediately. Treating stains promptly can prevent them from setting and becoming permanent.

Watch for Makeup Transfer:

  • Set Your Makeup: To minimize makeup transfer onto your costume, use a setting spray or powder to lock your makeup in place. If you’re wearing face paint or special effects makeup, make sure it’s fully dry before putting on your costume.
  • Avoid Touching Your Face: Try to avoid touching your face while in costume, as this can transfer oils and makeup onto the fabric.

Be Mindful of Movement:

  • Avoid Strain: If your costume includes tight seams, delicate fabrics, or heavy embellishments, be mindful of how you move. Avoid stretching or tugging at the costume, as this can cause tears or damage.
  • Take Care with Accessories: If your costume includes accessories like wings, props, or capes, be aware of your surroundings to avoid snagging or tearing the fabric.

3. Cleaning Your Costume After the Event

Proper cleaning is crucial for maintaining your costume’s appearance and preventing long-term damage.

Follow the Care Instructions:

  • Read the Label: Always check the care label on your costume for specific cleaning instructions. Some costumes are machine washable, while others may require hand washing or dry cleaning.
  • Spot Cleaning: For minor stains, spot clean using a mild detergent and cold water. Gently dab (don’t rub) the stained area with a clean cloth. Rinse with cold water and allow to air dry.

Washing Your Costume:

  • Hand Wash Delicate Fabrics: Costumes made from delicate materials like lace, silk, or satin should be hand washed in cold water with a gentle detergent. Avoid wringing out the fabric; instead, press it between two towels to remove excess water.
  • Machine Washing: If your costume is machine washable, use a gentle cycle with cold water. Place the costume in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging or stretching during the wash.
  • Avoid the Dryer: Air dry your costume by laying it flat on a towel or hanging it up. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat can shrink or damage the fabric.

Dry Cleaning:

  • Professional Cleaning: For costumes with complex construction, intricate details, or non-washable materials (like velvet or fur), professional dry cleaning is the safest option. Be sure to inform the dry cleaner of any specific stains or areas of concern.

4. Storing Your Costume Properly

How you store your costume after the event can make a big difference in its longevity.

Use Appropriate Hangers:

  • Padded Hangers: For costumes with delicate fabrics or heavy embellishments, use padded hangers to prevent stretching or misshaping the shoulders.
  • Avoid Wire Hangers: Wire hangers can leave dents and distort the shape of your costume. Opt for wooden or plastic hangers that provide more support.

Store in a Garment Bag:

  • Breathable Garment Bags: Store your costume in a breathable garment bag to protect it from dust, moisture, and pests. Avoid plastic bags, as they can trap moisture and lead to mildew or mold.
  • Label Your Bag: If you have multiple costumes, label each garment bag with a description or photo of the costume inside. This makes it easier to find the right costume when you need it.

Avoid Direct Sunlight and Humidity:

  • Cool, Dry Place: Store your costume in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Sunlight can fade colors, and humidity can cause mold or mildew growth.
  • Use Mothballs or Cedar: To protect your costume from moths and other pests, consider adding mothballs or cedar chips to your storage area. Just be sure that any moth repellents don’t come into direct contact with the fabric.

Fold with Care:

  • Fold Heavy Costumes: For heavier costumes or those made from stretchy fabrics, consider folding them and storing them in a box to avoid stretching. Place tissue paper between folds to prevent creases.
  • Stuff Accessories: If your costume includes hats, shoes, or other accessories, stuff them with tissue paper or soft fabric to help them retain their shape during storage.

5. Refreshing Your Costume for Future Use

If you plan to reuse your costume, a little care before the next wear can keep it looking fresh.

Deodorize and Freshen:

  • Air Out: Before wearing your costume again, take it out of storage and air it out to remove any musty odors. Hang it outside on a dry, breezy day if possible.
  • Fabric Freshener: Lightly spray your costume with a fabric freshener or a mixture of water and a few drops of essential oil to eliminate any lingering odors.

Check for Repairs:

  • Inspect for Damage: Before wearing your costume again, inspect it for any loose threads, missing buttons, or other damage that may have occurred during storage.
  • Make Repairs: Address any repairs well before you plan to wear the costume to avoid last-minute stress.

Yennefer of Vengerberg – CosplaySky Review

News, Review

what

Hello friends! Today I’m going to write a review of my new Yennefer from the videogame The Witcher!

This cosplay is sponsored by Cosplaysky ? They have a website here and a Facebook page here, feel free to visit them!

Let’s start!

1) Quality of the cosplay:
The cosplay includes : the white t-shirt, the gloves, the belt, the furry scarf, the blouse, pants, all the little ropes, and the fancy belt she wears under the blouse. I wore Triss cosplay so many times that I wanted to see how it feels being Team Yen… So I had high expectations for this cosplay!

A – The fabrics:
The outfit is made of fake leather and fancy painted fabric plus the furr is so nice. The only part I didn’t like was the gloves that were made of fake leather but I changed them for a real leather and the problem was fixed! 😉

B – The shape:
I always have to make it to fit my shape, I had to adjust the pants and the black blouse because it was too big for me. (but I usually do it for cosplays that I don’t make myself, because everyone has a different body… blah, blah… and I understand that it won’t 100% fit me).

C – The details:
Overall I like the cosplay itself, as you can see the details here:

The entire costume has great fabric, the buttons are perfect and the little pearls that she wears on her sleeves are great, all together it looks pretty cool!

2) Accuracy of the outfit:

The cosplay is very accurate to the photos on the website as you can see there:

3) The seller:

I think that CosplaySky is my fav cosplay store! They choose very wisely and they like details on their cosplays, they are always kind in their emails and they care about you! <3

4) The shipping:

I received the cosplay within 3 weeks, so the shipping is super nice! The cosplay wasn’t damaged at all, everything in its place!

5) The price:

The price of this Cosplay is around $115 dollars in their website, I think the price is super amazing not saying that finding a fabric that fits Yennefer costume is pretty hard also is the complete cosplay and with this quality it’s very affordable, the only thing is the necklace and handcrafted rings, but it’s a star c’mon you can find that kind of necklace in any goth shop.

Ann Takamaki Cat Cosplay Miccostumes review

News, Review

an

Hi friends! Today I’m going to write a review of my new Ann Takamaki Cat outfit from Persona 5!

This cosplay is sponsored by Miccostumes ? They have a website here and a Facebook page here, feel free to visit them!

Let’s start!

1) Quality of the cosplay:
The cosplay includes : the mask, the gloves, the jumpsuit, the tail, the whip, the socks. I wanted to do this cosplay so bad for so long that that I had high expectations for this cosplay!

A – The fabrics:
The outfit is overall made of shiny spandex so the whole costume is super warm after wearing a couple of hours, I have a weird body so I have to make it a little more small on the legs and on the hip area, all the other areas were pretty good for my body in a Small (very tight).

B – The shape:
For the catsuit, I mean the whole idea is to have the costume almost as tight on your skin so you can’t breathe! And it works! I ordered a small and I just had to make some adjustments on the legs and the hips, everything else fit perfectly… (and I understand that it won’t 100% fit me).

C – The details:
Overall I like the cosplay itself, as you can see the details here:

The mask is a little too big for my face but still looks pretty good, the whip is dangerous! XD Don’t let people play with it if you go to an event because you can kill with it!

I HAVE TO SAY THAT THIS COSTUME LOOKS PRETTY GOOD! You should try it!

2) Accuracy of the outfit:

The cosplay is very accurate to the photos on the website as you can see there:

I received the cosplay within 1 month, so the shipping is ok! The cosplay wasn’t damaged at all, everything in its place! you have to make sure is on stock so you don’t have my problem.

5) The price:

The price of this Cosplay is around $90 dollars in their website, I think the price is super good for a complete cosplay and with this quality + the wig, it’s very affordable, if you have the specs go for it!
